Food glorious food. Boy do we love it here at Pistachio. I mean who doesn’t like food? It’s literally what keeps us alive every single day. But, are we always fuelling our bodies with the right food to get us through the week?
It’s easy to reach for unhealthy, sugary foods when leading busy, stressful lives, it just seems easier and it makes us feel good, you know, for like a second, until we inevitably feel hungry again, irritable and crash somewhere around 3pm into a carby meltdown.
As aforementioned, we eat to live. TO LIVE. We, as human beings, need to eat in order to keep our hearts beating and our limbs moving, so we really should be making sure that what we’re putting into our bodies is pretty much the most helpful stuff possible to get us through a busy day, and keep us in perfect-ish health.
At Pistachio, we’re always pretty busy, which means we can be very bad at neglecting what’s best for our minds and bodies and instead opt for quick-fixes and unhealthy eating patterns when we’re feeling hangry. But, according to the work health organisation, some foods really can help to boost your brain activity, and we think it’s high-time we got onboard.
So, to help us – and you – beat the afternoon slump, we’ve investigated the best foods to help keep you focused, and productive.
*disclaimer – we wholeheartedly recommend you stay completely unfocused and unproductive on any weekend day of your choosing to help balance out that much needed brain function called sanity.
BANANAS!
Did you know that bananas are packed full of more than your daily amount (25 grams) of glucose needed for the brain to work at its absolute best? Well, what are you waiting for? Let’s go bananas!
Something fishy
Salmon has lots of omega 3 in it, which is good for your memory, reasoning and focus. Very important traits that we all need to effectively navigate the stresses and strains of the week.
Chocolate delight
Chocolate?! We can eat CHOCOLATE!? Yes, really. Dark chocolate has magnesium in it, which is a stress reliver and increases endorphins and helps to enhance your focus and concentration. And if you don’t like dark chocolate? Then all is not lost, studies have shown that milk chocolate may help improve your reaction time, verbal and visual memory! (we’re guessing in very rationed doses however…)
‘Av an Avocado
Well, we are living in an avocado obsessed world aren’t we? Who doesn’t love an avocado? In fact, I’m pretty sure if you’re born after 1985 then you’re biologically programmed to be obsessed with them to the exclusion of almost all other sustenance. Which is pretty good as it turns out, because avocados increase blood flow which fires up those needy little brain cells for us.
Go Green
Green tea, it’s one of those isn’t it? You either love it or you hate it, but whatever you’re opinion on this herbal drink, there’s no denying it’s abundant goodness for the body. It protects the brain from cellular damage, improves gut health and digestion, and helps to lower blood pressure. It’s an all -round all-star, and the real MVP during your working week.
Pumpkin magic
Weird flex but ok. Apparently pumpkin seeds are super good for providing long-lasting energy, something very necessary for a long, busy week, and get this, they also promote calmness. Which is awesome for combating stress, not so weird now huh?
The bluer the berry…
It is pretty well known that berries are a super healthy and nutritious food, but did you know that many studies have shown that the consumption of blue berries can delay the onset of short term memory loss? Pretty cool if you ask us…
Super erm Broccoli?
Broccoli is actually a ‘super food’ did you know? It’s a great source of vitamin K, which is known to enhance cognitive function and improve brainpower. Researchers have reported that because broccoli is high in compounds called glucosinolates, it can slow the breakdown of the neurotransmitter, acetylcholine, which we need for the central nervous system to perform properly and to keep our brains and our memories sharp. I’m sold! Time to get a Broccoli 4 Lyf tattoo…
And there you have it, everything you need to keep your week productive, focused and full of energy, plus you can still eat a little chocolate, you can thank us later…
